Prince George’s County police are investigating a shooting involving a District of Columbia police officer Friday morning.
The incident began around 8 a.m. as the wife and 9-year-old daughter of the officer were getting ready to leave their home in the 5000 block of Vienna Drive in Clinton, Md.
After the daughter got into the car, the mother realized she had forgotten something and went back into the home.
The father then noticed someone trying to break into the car, News4's Tracee Wilkins reported. He yelled at the man to get out of the car, at which point his daughter had the presence of mind to get out of the car, police said.
The would-be car thief then drove off in their car, driving across the grass toward the father, who opened fire with his duty weapon, police said. He crashed into another car in front of the home.
Two witnesses told News4 the D.C. officer chased the man into the wounds and several more shots were fired.
Police could not say if the officer had hit the man, but police said the man was injured, possibly from the crash.

He ultimately got away in a champagne-colored Toyota Camry with temporary tags.
Staff at local hospitals were told to be on the lookout for the man, and police are investigating a man who went to Prince George's Hospital Center suffering from a gunshot wound, but they are continuing their search in case there is no connection.
