D.C. Memorial Service Honors Officers Killed on Duty

Police officers who have died in the line of duty were honored Monday morning along with their families at an event in Washington.

Dozens of officers attended the memorial service outside the headquarters of the District of Columbia police department. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray spoke at the event.

The service honored officers from D.C., Maryland and Virginia who have died on duty.

It requires a special will and determination to pursue a career as a police officer, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier told the crowd. She said it's important to honor and comfort families of officers who have been killed.
