D.C. Leads 50 States in Out-of-Wedlock Births

50.8 percent of women in D.C. who gave birth last year were not married

More than half of babies born in D.C. last year were born to unmarried parents, according to new numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The report says 50.8 percent of women in D.C. between the ages of 15 and 50 who gave birth last year were not married. That's a higher percentage than any state in the country -- although it can be difficult to get an accurate comparison since D.C. is a city.

Louisiana came in second, with 49 percent.

Here in the capital region, almost 39 percent of Maryland babies and 31 percent of Virginia babies were born out of wedlock in 2012.
