English Teacher Named Mont. Co's ‘Teacher of the Year'

Jane Lindsay awarded $2,000 and a one-year car lease

An 8th grade teacher has been named Teacher of the Year for Montgomery County Public Schools.

Jane Lindsay has taught English and reading for the past five years at John Poole Middle School in Poolesville. She has worked for MCPS since 1988, previously at Rocky Hill Middle School and Strawberry Knoll Elementary School.

Tuesday night, she was awarded $2,000 and a one-year car lease at the Champions for Children Awards Celebration in Germantown.

"Mrs. Lindsay is a leader among her peers and is committed to helping her students and colleagues grow and improve," said Superintendent Joshua Starr.

Those who nominated Lindsay said she finds creative ways to engage students in their lessons and help them gain important literacy skills. Her colleagues also said she mentors and collaborates with her colleagues, and helped prepare the school to implement the Common Core State Standards in English.

"She is a committed educator who works tirelessly to ensure that all students are served to the highest levels," said Phil Kauffman, president of the Montgomery County Board of Education.

Lindsay will now compete for Teacher of the Year in Maryland.
