Couple Falls onto Gallery Place Metro Tracks

Two riders slipped onto the tracks at the Gallery Place Metro station on Monday.

The couple were in their 70s, the Washington Examiner reported.

Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel told NBC Washington that the pair were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident happened around 12:15 p.m., when the platforms in the station were crowded.  According to Taubenkibel, the couple slipped onto the Shady Grove bound tracks of the Red Line.

Other passengers on the platform helped haul the couple off of the tracks.

Metro advises riders that fall onto the platform to await assistance from Metro employees and not to touch any of the tracks.  WMATA says that if a customer finds themselves on the tracks while a train is arriving, there is a safety area below the lip of the platform where they can huddle.
