DC Councilwoman Wants Barry Probe Expanded

Bowser wants attorney to check out grant to foster care group

WASHINGTON -- D.C. Councilwoman Muriel Bowser wants investigators to expand their probe of her colleague Marion Barry.

Bowser has suggested that an attorney looking into Barry's use of taxpayer money to employ a then-girlfriend should also investigate Barry's issuance of a grant to a foster care group.

According to documents obtained by The Washington Post, two employees of the National Association of Former Foster Care Children of America allege that its executive director was unethical in administering a $291,000 grant. The funds were to provide tutoring and other services to D.C. youth.

To meet the contract's guidelines, executive director Louis Henderson said he hired Barry's longtime adviser, the Rev. Anthony Motley as the contract's fiscal agent.

Two former association employees claim that the funds never reached some who were to receive them.
