Cyclist Transported After Collision With Tractor-Trailer On U Street

Accident happened Tuesday morning

A serious accident between a bicyclist and a tractor trailer closed down U Street NW between 10th and 12th streets NW Tuesday morning.

Witnesses told WAMU 88.5 that the bicyclist, whose mangled Capital Bikeshare bicycle was sitting in the middle of U Street after the accident, was taken away in an ambulance in very serious condition.

The accident happened between 11th and 12 streets NW. It's not clear who was at fault, and the bicyclist's condition is not known at this time. About a dozen police officers were still on scene at about 9:45 a.m.

Tim Hull, who was riding his bike to work past the scene this morning, noted that the bicycle was in pretty bad condition.

"It's definitely causing me some concern; I ride my bike to and from work every day," he says. "This is a little troubling … the bicycle is in the middle of the street, so it kind of makes me wonder.

The bicyclist, a 29-year-old Northwest man, is in stable condition, News4's Pat Collins reported. He was charged with failure to yield right of way and a red light violation.

Capitol Bikeshare has had 1.5 million riders since it started in Sept. 2010. Seventeen crashes have been reported with no fatalities.
