Cummings Won't Run for Senate, Will Seek House Re-Election

Rep. Elijah Cummings says he won't run for Senate.

Cummings, a Democrat, announced his decision to seek re-election to his House seat in a statement Tuesday morning. The district includes parts of Baltimore city and Baltimore and Howard counties.

Cummings says that since Sen. Barbara Mikulski announced that she wouldn't seek re-election this year, he had been considering how to best serve the people of the Baltimore region, Maryland and the nation. He says he is mindful that serving in the senate presents a great opportunity, but the broader consequences of the 2016 elections are more important that his own future.

Cummings says he believes he will best serve people by continuing his work in Congress and working to elect "strong, progressive leadership up and down the ticket.''
