Eighteen people escaped a fire early Tuesday morning at a single-family home in Stafford County.
The fire started at about 3:40 a.m. at the one-story rambler with a two-story addition on Vista Woods Road in Garrisonville.
Seventeen of the 18 people in the home escaped unharmed. A woman was injured when she escaped through a first-floor window.
The fire started on the porch with improperly disposed smoking materials and quickly spread through open windows into the house.
Four cars and a recreational vehicle parked at the home were damaged, as well as the exterior siding of a neighboring home.
Despite earlier reports that working smoke alarms alerted the residents to the fire, electricity to the house had been cut a couple of weeks ago.
