Interim Superintendent Alvin Crawley will stay with Prince George's County Public Schools until a new CEO is announced, according to officials.
Crawley resigned from his position earlier this year and was supposed to step down June 3. Last week, County Executive Rushern Baker asked Crawley to stay with the school system.
"Now we can focus on identifying a new school leader and develop a comprehensive transition plan," Baker said. "The people of Prince George's County owe Dr. Crawley a great deal of gratitude for his dedication to our children and this County. He should be commended for putting our children first."
Tuesday evening, Baker held a town hall-style meeting to gauge what residents think of the school system's new management legislation.
Under the new regulations, Baker will hear recommendations from a three-member search committee appointed by Gov. Martin O'Malley and then pick three finalists for the county's superintendent position, renamed CEO of Prince George's County Public Schools.
Many residents, including the Members of Citizens for an Elected Board, are calling for a referendum on the new regulations.

Earlier this month, all three candidates for the position withdrew their names from consideration, including Crawley.
