Crane Crashes In Bethesda

Cab operator hospitalized with broken leg

A Bethesda neighborhood had a near-miss Saturday afternoon, when a crane removing a tree tipped over and crashed.

Alan Weinberger, a resident of the neighborhood on Bent Branch Road in Bethesda, told News4 that the accident was caused by the crane attempting to move a log that was too heavy for it.

"The boom went over into my neighbor's property," Weinberger said. That was followed by the cab topping over on its side.

The crane was originally brought in to remove trees that were damaged in last week's derecho storm.

The damage to the houses was minimal, and Weinberger says that it was fortunate that no fire resulted from the crane's leaking diesel fuel. Even more fortunate, he said, was the fact that the worst injury suffered was a broken leg by the cab operator.
