A corrections officer in Maryland has been arrested after police say he admitted to binding his wife in the basement of their home and torturing her for hours.
Armando Quispe Rodriguez, 45, is charged with attempted murder, assault, false imprisonment and other charges. He was put on leave without pay from his job at the Department of Corrections in Prince George's County, where he worked for 19 years.
His wife remains in serious condition, police say.
Rodriguez attacked his wife as she slept, police said, shackling her ankles, handcuffing her wrists and putting a green plastic bag over her head. He then stabbed her more than 23 times over the course of several hours, police said.
Rodriguez called police about 2 p.m. Friday and reported that he and his wife had been stabbed.
"He did call as if he wasn't even the suspect," police spokesperson Diane Richardson told News4. "It was definitely torture."
When police arrived at his home, police found Rodriguez with lacerations on his hands. Richardson said the woman was found in the basement, tied to the stair railing and suffering from stab wounds.

The couple were flown to separate hospitals to be treated for serious injuries.
Police arrested Rodriguez on Monday after he was released from the hospital.
The couple has two children, but they were not home during the attack.
