Two Cops Wounded, 18-Year-Old Dies in Gunfight

Police fired after man refused to hand over gun

The two D.C. plain clothes police officers injured during a gunfight in Adams Morgan were working on an undercovery robbery detail early Saturday morning, according to police.

A fight broke out around 3:30 a.m. near Kalorama Road, NW, and Champlain Street and, when 18-year-old Michael Griffin of the 1400 block of Fairmount St., NW, wouldn't hand over his gun, the officers fired, D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said.

Griffin died in the following exchange of gun fire, according to Lanier, who addressed the case at a press conference Saturday afternoon with Mayor Adrian Fenty and city council members Jim Graham and Jack Evans.

During the conference, Graham suggested putting a permanent police outpost in Kalorama to curb the violence.

One of the officers was wounded in the lower back; the second caught a bullet fragment in his leg, Lanier said.

The officers were hospitalized with non, life-threatening wounds, are expected to be OK.
