Controversial Hindu Driveway Painting Covered

Homeowner paints over religious symbol

A controversial Hindu painting on a Loudoun County driveway has been covered.

Ram Balasubramanian has covered the painting in black paint and sent a new picture of the driveway to his homeowner's association, LoudounExtra reported. Balasubramanian called it a temporary solution, as the outline of the painting is still visable.

In order to welcome guests to a thread ceremony for his 14-year-old son, Balasubramanian painted a kolam on his driveway, which upset his homeowners' association. He was fined $10 per day until reaching the maximum $900.

The kolam is a religious expression that welcomes the Hindu goddess of prosperity, as well as guests, into the home, said Balasubramanian, a Realtor and devout Hindu.

A thread ceremony is a coming-of-age ritual like confirmation or a bar mitzvah, the Post reported.
