Construction on GW Parkway to Reduce Lanes, Slow Traffic

The National Park Service says construction will wrap up in the fall

Your commute could take longer for the next couple of months if you frequent the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

A construction project starting on Monday will reduce the parkway's four lanes down to three narrow lanes near and over the Windy Run Bridge, the National Park Service says. Work on the bridge is set to start before the morning rush, NPS said.

There will be one southbound lane and one northbound lane open and the third lane will be reversible to accommodate morning and evening rush hours, NPS said.

NPS said crews will shift traffic in the lanes to accommodate rush hour traffic. The lane shift will require intermittent, off peak, single-lane closures on the GW Parkway.

The reversible lane will be northbound from noon to 8 p.m. and run southbound from 8 p.m. to noon. On Saturday and Sunday the reversible lane will only be southbound.

Drivers will also have to slow down to 35 miles per hour in the work zone.

NPS cautioned that drivers should also expect to see more U.S. Park Police officers and construction workers in the road before and after the scheduled times for traffic shifts.
