Howard County Highway Worker Fatally Struck by Car

Worker was putting out traffic cones to close off a westbound lane of State Route 216

Howard County police have identified the highway worker who was struck and killed while closing a lane of traffic Tuesday night.

Erick Meekins, 40, of Baltimore was placing cones on a westbound lane of state Route 216 in the Scaggsville area when he was hit by a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu around 9:20 p.m.

Police say Meekins, who was wearing a reflective shirt, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the car, a juvenile, remained on the scene. No charges have been issued. The investigation into the crash is continuing.

Meekins was a state highway contractor for Road Safety Traffic Control Company, LLC.

The westbound lanes of Route 216 was closed for about two hours during the investigation.
