Construction Mistake Delays Silver Spring Transit Center

Transportation facility now set to open this summer

The opening of the Silver Spring Transit Center has been delayed once again -- this time due to construction mistake.

The three-story facility is now set to be ready for the public this summer.

Work began on the transit center in 2008. It was originally set to open in the spring of 2009, but that date has been moved about half a dozen times, according to a report in the Washington Post.

The most recent delay is attributed to too-thin concrete covering reinforced steel.

Project managers worried that chilling and thawing over several winters could leave the building less stable over time, according to the Post article.

Once complete, the Silver Spring Transit Center will provide access to Metrorail, MARC trains, Metro and Ride-On buses and taxis.
