Community Rallies for Wounded Firefighter

A motorcycle accident left John Wynkoop wounded and his wife dead. And now, a community is rallying around him to help him recover.

Wynkoop, 54, and his wife were riding his motorcycle in Howard County Sept. 27 when a car turned into their path, and they were both thrown from the bike. They were taken to the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

His wife, Linda, died the next day, and John has been fighting for his life since the accident.

Saturday, the fire station he has volunteered with since he was 16 years old will hold a fundraiser in his honor. His family will be in attendance, and all the money raised will help pay for Wynkoop's recovery.

The fundraiser is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department on Crescent Road in Greenbelt, Md.
