Cocaine Hidden in Candy Seized by Dulles Airport Officials

More than one and a half pounds of cocaine was found

Some candy isn't just bad for your teeth, it's also illegal.

Officials at Washington Dulles Airport discovered 1.5 pounds cocaine hidden inside caramelized sugar cane sweets Wednesday. Customs and Border Patrol agents seized the candy from a Honduran woman who entered the country as a courier.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in news release Thursday the woman arrived on a flight from El Salvador.

CBP officers said they found a conical package wrapped in cellophane among her belongings and the sweets were inside. When an officer poked a knife into one of the sweets, a white powder was discovered on the blade.

The powder tested positive for cocaine and officials said the street value for that amount of the drug could be more than $80,000.

Officials said the woman was returned abroad and banned from entering the U.S. for at least five years.

CBP Port Director for the Port of Washington, Wayne Biondi, praised the work of his officers.

"[They] have proven to be exceptionally skilled at discovering unique concealment methods,” he said. "CBP officers remain ever vigilant at intercepting illicit narcotics before it can hurt our families and communities."
