A half-inch to an inch-and-a-half of rain could accumulate in the D.C. area by Thursday evening as a couple of rain systems move through the area.
Light rain fell throughout the area Wednesday afternoon with passing downpours. That could continue past midnight.
A coastal flood warning is in effect until midnight in D.C., Arlington, Falls Church and Alexandria due to a tide 2 feet to 2-and-a-half feet above normal about high tide -- 9:12 p.m. at the Washington Channel and 9:20 p.m. in Alexandria. People who live near the coast should be ready for flooding.
The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory for the D.C. area from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Higher than normal tide coupled with wind could cause flooding of low-lying areas along the shore, mainly near and to the south of Alexandria, Va.
Expect a respite from the rain after midnight and much of the day Thursday -- with a possibility of the sun breaking through the gray -- before more showers pass through the area.
There’s a chance of rain again Friday before the area dries out for the weekend.
