Falls Church School Honors Children Who Died in Suspected DUI Crash on Indian Head Highway

A school in Falls Church, Virginia, has honored three young siblings who lost their lives in a suspected drunk driving crash.

Alexander and Rosalie Mejia, both 5, and their 1-year-old brother, Isaac, were killed on Dec. 30 when the driver of a pickup truck rear-ended the family's car on Indian Head Highway in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Lemon Road Elementary, where the two older children attended school, dedicated the “Little Library” to honor their memories. The children’s parents attended the ceremony and thanked the school and community for their support.

“They loved coming to school,” said Juanita Mejia, the young victims’ mother. “It’s so beautiful that there’s something here that in memory of them gives out to the community.”

Mejia and her husband Alexis were both critically injured in the crash. A fundraiser created by a family friend has raised more than $118,000 for the couple.

Driver Thomas Hawks had a blood alcohol level of more than twice the Maryland legal limit when he hit the family’s vehicle, the state’s attorney said.

Hawks was indicted in January and faces several charges, including three counts of vehicular manslaughter as a result of gross negligence and two counts of causing life-threatening injuries by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
