Child Struck, Killed by SUV in Charles County

Preliminary investigation: Boy stepped into path of vehicle

A child was struck and killed by an SUV in Waldorf, Md., Tuesday afternoon.

A preliminary investigation found 3-year-old Elias Masanaa Charles-Kabongo of Waldorf stepped into the path of the SUV in the 10500 block of Sugarberry Street about 2 p.m., according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

The boy was in a vehicle with his mother on their way home, News4's Jackie Bensen reported, and when she stopped and got out of the vehicle to hand a letter to a mail carrier, the boy got out of the car, walked behind the vehicle and into the path of the SUV.

The 48-year-old driver of the SUV remained at the scene. Speed does not appear to have factored in the accident.

The boy's family had recently moved to the area from Canada.

The sheriff's office originally reported that the boy was 6 years old.
