A 4-year-old Maryland boy shot himself in the head using a family member's gun Thursday, police said.

According to a news release from Charles County Police, the boy was playing in the yard of a home in the 10800 block of Hopewell Place in La Plata, Md. around 6 p.m. while his grandmother watched him.

The woman said she heard a gunshot and her grandson walked over to her with a head injury. The child was transported to a local hospital -- a bullet had grazed his head and he is expected to be OK. Police say the boy shot himself with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, which was found inside a car parked in the home's driveway.

The gun is registered to a family member of the young boy, police said.

    The investigation is ongoing.
