Child Care Provider Slapped Toddler 8 Times, Police Say

Montgomery County police say a child care provider was caught on camera slapping a 2-year-old girl eight times, and there could be more victims.

Christina Dhanaraj, 65, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was arrested Jan. 12 and charged with second-degree child abuse.

The day of her arrest, police received a video of Dhanaraj verbally scolding a 2-year-old girl who was sitting quietly in a room inside Dhanaraj's home. Dhanaraj then slapped the child eight times with an open hand, causing the child to cry loudly, police say.

Dhanaraj pushed the victim to the floor, grabbed her by the head and pushed  her once again with a jerking motion, according to police. The force of the push moved the victim from her seated position, police say.

Investigators believe the incident happened during November or December of 2017.

During a police interview, Dhanaraj admitted to committing the abuse seen on the video.

She has been released on bond. Her childcare provider license was revoked after the incident.

Police say Dhanaraj ran a daycare out of her Winding Waye Lane home for 10 years, and they are concerned there could be additional victims.
