Search for Woman Missing After Air Crash in Maryland

Maryland authorities recovered the body of a female passenger aboard a small plane that crashed in the Chesapeake Bay off Smith Island in Somerset County.

The U.S. Coast Guard tentatively identified the body of Mary L. Lagerquist, 78, of Sequim, Washington.

The woman's son, who was piloting the plane and was able to swim to shore after the crash, told police he and his mother got out of the single-engine plane before it sank on Sunday afternoon, but she died while they were in the water.

The pilot has been identified as Lanson C. Ross III, of Ft. Washington, Md.

Ross told investigators he had left Hyde Field in Clinton, Md. on Saturday morning, heading to Tangier Island.  On the return leg from the island, Ross said his aircraft began experiencing mechanical problems.  He reported losing power trying to reach land at Smith Island.
