Chemical Explosion at UMD Lab

At least 2 students sustain acid burns

Acid burned two people in a University of Maryland laboratory on Monday, according to Prince George's Fire spokesperson Mark Brady.

The Prince George's County Fire Department responded to the Chemistry Building on the College Park campus shortly after noon.

Two female students were conducting an experiment with nitric acid and sulfuric acid and caused a violent chemical reaction when that combination was introduced into a chemical waste container.

The two students sustained first- and second-degree burns and suffered superficial cuts in the incident.

Firefighters extinguished a small fire in and near the third-floor lab's chemical ventilation hood.

The chemistry building was evacuated but reopened later in the afternoon.
