Cathedral Closed at Least Until Sept. 9 for Earthquake Repairs

Damage from the earthquake will keep the National Cathedral closed for at least another full week.

The tremors over D.C. caused several pieces of limestone from the top of the cathedral to break off and fall. There are also cracks on the upper part of the inside of the building.

Most of the damage to the cathedral was limited to decorative pieces. Engineers examined the building and have determined that it is structurally sound.

However, the cathedral staff is keeping the building closed to make sure that everyone is safe during the extensive repairs.

Repairing the cathedral will likely impact those who live and work around the building. Temporary fencing has been erected and is blocking access to roads and sidewalks.

The cathedral will be closed until at least Sept. 9. Officials hope to reopen it then in time for the weekend of commemorative events for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
