Capital Bikeshare, the District's bike-sharing service, is a go-to solution for big events in D.C. such as inaugurations. But Bikeshare is warning that the visit of Pope Francis Sept. 22 through 24 is not a typical big event.
For one thing, the Pope's events are in typically Bikeshare-friendly locations, including the White House, the National Mall, near Catholic University and the Capitol. When the Pope is there, roads will close -- and that will cut off access to many Bikeshare locations.
In addition, Bikeshare is warning that closed roads may prevent it from "rebalancing" -- when they truck a large number of bikes in a van from one location to another after a big event.
Bikeshare suggests that anyone who wants to use the system watch its social media channels to see what's going on.
Capital Bikeshare plans to offer its corral service at the following locations and times:
Wednesday, Sept. 23:
- 7 a.m. to noon: 10th Street and Constitution Avenue NW
- Noon to 6 p.m.: 10th Street and Monroe Avenue NE
Thursday, Sept. 24:
- 7 a.m. to Noon: 10th Street and Constitution Avenue NW
It will NOT offer morning corral service at 21st and I streets NW and 13th Street and New York Avenue NW on these days.
