The Washington Post is reporting the wildly popular bike-sharing program could expand its reach in Montgomery County in the near future.

County officials announced this week that they had applied for a $1 million grant from Maryland’s transportation department.

If the grant goes through, 29 stations would open in Bethesda, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase, and the Medical Center area. The stations would carry a total of 204 bikes.

Montgomery County Council member Hans Riemer told the Post that the $1 million grant would cover 80 percent of the required capital funding, with the county responsible for the remaining 20 percent. According to Riemer, the county hopes that private sector partners would join them in raising the required funds.

The county previously received a $1.3 million grant this past June to set up bike-sharing stations in Rockville and Shady Grove. Those stations are set to open next year and would connect with the new proposed system.

The Maryland Department of Transportation is set to announce grant awards ealy next year.
