Bus Driver's Death by Blue Line No Accident

42-year-old was on administrative leave

Metrobus driver Kurtland Johnson, 42, of Washington, D.C., has been identified as the man who was struck and fatally injured by a Blue Line train Friday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses at the McPherson Square Metrorail station reported that Johnson intentionally stepped in front of the train.

Johnson had been on administrative leave since September 2008, pending the results of an internal investigation into a bus accident last March.

Johnson was driving Metrobus 3719 on the N8 route to the Van Ness-UDC Metrorail station when an automobile attempted to pass the bus at Connecticut Ave., and Van Ness Street N.W., and made contact with the bus on March 6, 2008.

At the time of the incident, there were no reported injuries to the seven passengers on board the bus, Johnson, or the automobile driver -- and charges were not filed by the D.C. Metropolitan Police following the accident.

Metro says it is standard procedure for the agency to conduct internal investigations after accidents or incidents involving Metro vehicles.

Blue and Orange line Metrorail service was disrupted for about three hours Friday after Johnson was fatally struck by a six-car train at 1:16 p.m. at McPherson Square.

Metro Transit Police Department and the District of Columbia Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating Johnson's death.
