District Says NE Homicide First of 2012

56-year-old found dead Saturday morning

Police in the District have identified a man found dead in Northeast early Saturday morning, and ruled him to be the first homicide of 2012.

Investigators discovered the body of 56-year-old Leroy Studevant of Northeast near a creek under a pathway in the 4200 block of Hunt Place, Northeast shortly after 8 a.m. on New Year's Eve. Studevant was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Sunday, Studevant's death was ruled a case of homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The official cause of death was ruled to be "strangulation associated with piercing blunt force trauma."

Officials say that because the cause of death was ruled on New Year's Day, Studevant is officially the first homicide of 2012. The District of Coumbia ended 2011 with 108 recorded homicides.

No arrests have been made to this point. Anyone with information is asked to call (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-2746. Tips can also be texted to 50411.
