Students Find Body Near Waldorf Middle School: Officials

Students walking to Benjamin Stoddert Middle School on Friday morning found the body of a man

Students walking to school in Waldorf, Maryland, on Friday morning found the body of a man near a bike path, police say.

The students were walking along a trail toward Benjamin Stoddert Middle School about 7:30 a.m. when they saw what they believed to be a body, police said. They walked to school and reported their disturbing discovery.

School officials confirmed that Charles County Sheriff and Maryland State Fire officials investigated and found the body of a man. Police said the body had signs of trauma to the lower body but indicated the injuries are not consistent with a gunshot or stab wound.

There is a wooded area behind the school with trails connecting Wakefield Circle, Bannister Circle and the school grounds on the 2000 block of St. Thomas Drive.

Many people in the area use the trail because it connects different neighborhoods and the school. Investigators believe the body had not been there for very long, said Charles County Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Diane Richardson.
