Body Boarder Drowns in Rip Tide

He was one of several people who got caught in the strong current

A body boarder who got caught in a rip current drowned at the Oceanfront at Virginia Beach Saturday afternoon, just hours after checking into a hotel with his family.

Brodie Frederick, Jr., 32, of Greenbelt, Md., got caught in the current off 10th Street around noon. Frederick was one of several people in the water who got caught in the strong current, according to police.

Lifeguards, who were in the water trying to help the swimmers, were able to get the help of a passing marine patrol boat in the rescue attempt.

An officer from the boat brought Frederick aboard and gave him CPR until they reached shore.  An ambulance then took Frederick to Sentara Virginia Beach General, where doctors pronounced him dead just after 1:30 p.m.

Frederick and several other family members had gone into the water on body boards.  The rip current separated Frederick from his family and pulled him out to sea, police said.
