“Blair Witch” Town to Auction Signs Popular Among Thieves

Burkittsville hopes to profit from movie memorabilia

The town of Burkittsville, Md., is perhaps best known for its association with 1999's "The Blair Witch Project."

Now, more than 10 years after the film's debut, the town is planning to test the market for "Blair Witch" memorabilia. Burkittsville plans to auction off some welcome signs, similar to those seen in the film.

While "The Blair Witch" made millions (almost $250 million) for Artisan Entertainment, the same can't be said for the town. The film company replaced several "Welcome to Burkittsville" signs after souvenir hunters swiped them.

Even those heavy metal replacements were lifted. The town now has new signs that do not in any way resemble those in the film.

At least one of the signs will likely hit eBay this weekend, with a reserve price of $1,500. Burkittsville's mayor expressed interest in selling at least two of the signs locally.
