Bill Proposed to Limit Outside Work of DC City Council

A Washington, D.C., City Council member has proposed a bill that would ban nearly all outside employment for council members.

WTOP-FM reports the Tuesday proposal by Councilwoman Brianne Nadeau comes as Councilman Jack Evans is under investigation for using his position to solicit business from area lobbyists. Six other councilmembers are co-sponsoring the bill, which would need to go before voters if it's approved.

Email records show Evans pitched himself to area lobbyists, arguing they should employ him because of his influence as the area transit board chair and the city's longest-serving lawmaker.

The transit agency is investigating Evans, who also is under federal investigation over legislation he promoted in 2016 that would've benefited a digital sign company.

The council on Tuesday also voted to remove some of Evans' responsibilities.
