Bikeshare Approved by Alexandria City Council

On Tuesday, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to authorize the extension of the Capital Bikeshare program to the city.

The program will start small with a pilot program featuring six stations and 54 bicycles placed in the Old Town and Carlyle areas.

Federal grant money will pay for most of the estimated $400,000 cost.

Officials expect the program to be up and running by the spring or summer of 2012, and if the program proves successful, the city can explore the option of expanding to other areas.

The District and Arlington County are already in the program, maintaining a fleet of 1,100 bikes.
