Capital Bikeshare is headed to Montgomery County.
The county's transportation department signed a deal last week that will bring 50 bikeshare stations to the county. They should be up and running by late summer, according to county officials.
Twenty stations with a total of 200 bikes will be installed in the Rockville and Shady Grove areas. Specific locations have not been determined but will likely include the Rockville and Shady Grove Metro stations and Rockville Town Center.
Another 30 bike stations will be scattered across Bethesda, Takoma Park, Silver Spring and Friendship Heights.
Capital Bikeshare also announced this week that it will introduce Daily Key memberships. This will allow casual users to obtain the same key fobs used by customers with monthly or yearly memberships to Capital Bikeshare.
The keys will cost $10 and will include the first one-day bike rental. Capital Bikeshare says this new option is designed to reduce barriers to using the system and make it a more viable option for those using the system on an occasional basis. Until now, daily memberships had to be purchased from a Bikeshare station using a credit or debit card.
Capital Bikeshare recently hit four million trips across its system. It currently has stations in D.C, Arlington and Alexandria. It has been in operation since 2010 and is the largest bike-share program in the nation.
