Beltway South Closing Overnight at I-66

Detours to add drive time

Late night drivers in Northern Virginia may want to steer clear of the Beltway at Interstate 66.

I-495 South will be closed for construction work.  The Virginia Department of Transportation said crews will be placing steel bridge beams over the Beltway as part of the High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes Project.  The southbound lanes on the interstate will close at 9:30 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

Officials have set up detours for drivers traveling south on I-495 which they estimate will add 15-20 minutes to the drive-time. Drivers traveling west on I-66 who want to take the Beltway south must continue past their exit and turn around at the Nutley Street exit.

The HOT lanes project is creating 14 miles of toll lanes on I-495 from Springfield to north of the Dulles Toll Road.  There will be two lanes traveling in each direction.  The project is scheduled for completion late next year.
