Study Agrees: Beltway Commuting's a Beast

I-495 ranks third most congested

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know driving on the Beltway can be one of the most miserable experiences of the day, but how does it compare to other roadways around the country?

In a national study by The Daily Beast, Interstate 495 ranked as the third worst commute -- just behind Hollywood Freeway in L.A. and Lunalilo Freeway in Honolulu.

So what's the worst bottleneck on the whole 64-mile stretch? Exit 2-A on to the Wilson Bridge. According to data compiled by traffic-tracking firm INRIX, commuters spend 31 hours of congestion in that spot, moving at an average of 21.2 mph.

"It has a number of twists and turns, people speed on it and its got a lot of slow points, too. It's certainly not a freeway without its challenges," WTOP's Adam Tuss told The Daily Beast.

Traffic troubles seem to plague our entire region. Interstate 264 in Virginia Beach ranked in a 18th and the Baltimore Beltway ranked in 21st. Interstate 95 in Richmond also made the list, coming in at 75th .
