Baltimore Probing Speed Camera Accuracy

Baltimore transportation officials say they're probing the accuracy of speed cameras. The cameras automatically generate tickets for vehicles detected to be traveling over the speed limit. However, they have generated complaints they are also mistakenly ticketing those under the speed limit.

Chris Gilligan, a spokesman for the city's speed camera contractor, Xerox State & Local Solutions, told The Baltimore Sun a review is underway of the city's 83 speed cameras. However, he said the company believes the error rate is below 1 percent.

An audit released last month by the State Highway Administration found citations were issued to less than half of drivers caught speeding in work zones during the first 9 months of the state's work-zone speed camera program. Others were dismissed due to reliability and readability issues.
