Speedy Delivery: Baby Born on I-270

Emergency crews were called to assist a woman in labor just before 6:30 a.m.

The baby born on a Metro platform earlier this month may have a new friend: Emergency crews delivered a baby girl on the side of Interstate 270 in Maryland early Thursday.

Maryland State Police and Montgomery County Fire and EMS were called to assist a woman having labor pains just before 6:30 a.m.

But the newborn made her arrival before crews did, said Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a spokesman for the fire department.

They found the new mom -- and her baby girl -- in a vehicle on the shoulder of I-270 South at Route 118, in the Germantown area.

They were taken to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Graham said they are doing well.

Traffic backups around southbound I-270 were about two miles long shortly before 7 a.m.
