BGE Warning Customers of New Utility Scam

Caller pretends to be a BGE rep who claims the customer's service is scheduled to be terminated

Baltimore Gas and Electric is warning customers about a new telephone scam.

Nearly two dozen customers have notified the utility about the scam over the past two weeks. Spokeswoman Rachael Lighty says most of the complaints have come from the Baltimore area.

Customers say they've received calls from someone pretending to be a BGE representative who claims the customer's service is scheduled to be terminated.

The scammer then claims customers can get a prepaid Visa debit card to pay their bill. Customers who agree are told to call another phone number and provide personal information to pay the bill. BGE says the funds are not being used to pay customers' bills.

The utility says customers should notify authorities if they get a suspicious call. text
