Search for Missing Small Plane Underway in Ocean City

Crews found an oil slick and debris in the ocean, near the Ocean City Airport

A search for a missing small plane is underway off Ocean City, Maryland, officials say.

The pilot took off from Baltimore County Wednesday night, en route to Ocean City, and still had not been seen by Thursday morning, state police said Thursday afternoon.

Crews are searching for the aircraft by water and by air.

It's still unknown how many people were on board, police said.

Federal officials notified state police of the missing plane about 10 a.m. Thursday. Soon after, a search began.

By air, state police saw an oil slick in the ocean, about 1.5 miles from Ocean City Airport. Then, natural resources officers in the water found debris "believed to be associated with an aircraft," state police said.

The Coast Guard and multiple police jurisdictions are assisting in the search.
