Ask Liz: Paying for Parking Online

Getting a parking ticket can be a drag. What can be even more annoying is when the ticket doesn't show up in the online payment system. This got one of our viewers asking why it can take so long for some DC parking tickets to show up in the online payment system.

The DC Deparment of Motor Vehicles provided us with the answer.

It said that it all depends on whether your ticket was handwritten or computer-generated. Tickets that are computer-generated are downloaded the next day and are available for payment at that time.

However, handwritten tickets are processed by a ticket-writing agency and then submitted to the DMV. Once the DMV receives it, it takes about 2-3 business days to get it keyed into the database. If the total process takes longer than 20 calendar days, the ticket is dismissed.

By the way, if you donโ€™t want to check every day to see if your ticket has been registered online, you can sign up for a ticket alert service through your email. Get more information at the DC DMV's website.
