Ask Liz: Does Liquor Have a Shelf Life?

The holiday season is in full swing, and New Year's Eve is right around the corner. So, do you need to toss that liquor from December 31st, or is it still safe to drink?

We turned to the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to get the answer to this question. It tells us that distilled spirits do NOT spoil unless they are mixed with something else. A regular bottle of liquor, such as rum or vodka, is fine even after it is opened.

However, cream-based drinks like eggnog DO expire. Another reason to always check the label: some drinks need to be refrigerated after opening.
