Aruba Suspect to Remain in Custody 60 More Days

An Aruban judge ruled authorities have enough evidence to keep a Maryland man in custody in the disappearance and presumed death of his travel companion.

Gary Giordano, 50, has been detained almost a month since the disappearance of 35-year-old Robyn Gardner. Police and prosecutors on the Dutch Caribbean island got the examining magistrate’s consent to keep holding him while they continue their probe.

Giordano has told investigators that the 35-year-old Gardner disappeared while snorkeling on Aug. 2. He assisted the search but was detained at the airport Aug. 5 as he tried to leave the country because of questions about his account of what happened. A judge ruled Aug. 15 that there is enough evidence to hold Giordano for another 16 more days on suspicion of involvement in Gardner's presumed death.

Aruba Solicitor General Taco Stein has said manslaughter charges are being considered.

Anyone with information in the case should contact Aruban authorities.
