Charge in Fighting Following Watkins Mill Football Game

Fighting led to responding police cruiser striking 15-year-old

Montgomery County police charged a juvenile in the fighting that led to a 15-year-old girl being struck by a responding police cruiser in the neighborhood around Watkins Mill High School Sept. 21.

The fighting followed a football game.

Janaya Richards, 15, was taken to Suburban Hospital in critical condition after being struck. She is improving but remains in the hospital.

A 17-year-old Watkins Mill student was charged as juvenile with second-degree assault.

Police do not expect further charges at this point, but more information could surface. Police have said the fighting was so chaotic, it's difficult to determine who to charge.

Friday night is the homecoming game at Watkins Mill. The principal sent a letter to the Watkins Mill community assuring that preparations for a safe game are under way.
