Arrest Made in Chevy Chase Three-Alarm Fire

Suspect voluntarily confessed to starting the fire

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Investigators have made an arrest in a three-alarm fire that occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrested 24-year-old Abraham Ogazgi Kiflu of Chevy Chase, Md., shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning.

Fire Chief Richard Bowers says that Kiflu voluntarily went to the 3rd District Police Station during the night, and voluntarily confessed to starting the fire during an interview.

The initial fire, which destroyed or damaged at least 34 apartment building units, ended up displacing more than 100 people and causing more than $1 million in damage. Though no civilians were injured, two firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Kiflu was charged with 1st Degree Arson, with additional charges pending. The investigation is ongoing.
