Alleged Serial Bank Robber Arrested in Kensington

Police arrest and charge a suspect in four bank robberies.

Police arrested and charged a Hyattsville man in four bank robberies in Montgomery County.

Jose Mercedes, 45, of the 8400 block of Melissa Street was arrested Monday following a manhunt through Kensington and charged with four counts of armed robbery.

A robbery was reported at an M&T Bank on Montgomery Avenue in Kensington Monday evening. A suspect reportedly handed the teller a note saying he had a weapon and demanded money. He fled the scene, but was located shortly after by K9 officers inside a shed in the 3200 block of McComas Avenue.

The proceeds from the bank were found in his pocket, and a bag of money and other evidence were found nearby.

During questioning, Mercedes admitted to the robbery, as well as those of the Wells Fargo bank at 9812 Falls Road in Potomac in March, the M&T bank at 7920 Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda in December and the M&T bank at 10100 River Road in Potomac in December.

Mercedes is currently being held without bond, pending a bond review hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

At the time of his most recent crime, Mercedes was on probation for a theft charge, police said. Court records show he has an extensive criminal record in Montgomery and Prince George's counties, News4's Jackie Bensen reported.
