Employee Kills Himself After Barricade Near Business, Police Say

An employee of a Silver Spring landscaping business apparently killed himself after an hours-long barricade on the property Monday, Montgomery County police said.

Police said when the man arrived at work Monday morning, he had seemed upset and agitated. He went to his car, retrieved a shotgun and pointed it at another employee before firing a shot into a pile of mulch, they said.

Authorities received a 911 call at 8:10 a.m.

The suspect barricaded himself with mulch and other materials outside the business in the 8900 block of Brookville Road.

An emergency response team converged on the scene and attempted to negotiate with him via cellphone. Authorities heard a gunshot around 12:16 p.m., and determined that the suspect had killed himself, they said.

No one else was reported injured.

Multiple roads in the area were closed during the incident.

"Very nice guy, but I don' t know what his problem was today," said a co-worker, who didn't want to be identified.

A police spokeswoman said detectives are investigating to determine why the man may have been upset.

The suspect's identity has not yet been released to the public.
